Do you dream of playing basketball at a higher level but don’t have the help you want or need to achieve that goal? I will give you some tips to make the journey much easier.
Getting better by yourself
For most of my life, I never had a trainer, gym, or connections to help me get better every day…. So I had to get it out the mud. You are going to have to find a court, watch YouTube trainers, while go to your local gym and pay for a membership if needed.
If you want to get better
Spend an hour before you go to work out on YouTube. Watch trainers like Chris Johnson and Theguardwhisper for inspiration and ideas for drills. Anywhere with a hoop will do. You are only limited by your imagination.
Understanding your playstyle
Before you can even get help from someone else, you have to know how you play. What are your strengths and weaknesses?
- Can you dribble with your right hand
- Your left hand
- Can you make a right-hand layup
- A left-hand layup
- Can you hit a 1-2 dribble pull-up
- Can you catch and shoot
- Do you play defense
You only get better if you answer with TRUTH!

Do what the elite don’t
A lot of elite players don’t have the mental toughness that you, as an underdog, have. Playing outside in the summer. Working out and going hard, pushing yourself. e.g. Heart Over Help!
As a kid, I would go out at the hottest part of the day and work on my skills. The lack of people’s belief in me pushed me even harder, altogether you must let it fuel you to get better by any means necessary!
To beat the learning curve and the head start the elite players have.

Resources aren’t everything
Most of the time, what wills people to the end of the race isn’t these skills. It’s their will to win.
I improved at basketball by pushing myself, rather than waiting for those who doubted me. While they may have more chances now, in the end, heart will decide who truly belongs.
