BJ Brown is a rising Junior out of Birmingham, Alabama. The 5’10” guard is a must-see attraction. We will break down what makes him such an effective guard at the college level.

Brown averaged an impressive 19 points a game while also managing the team. He added 6.9 assists and 5.2 rebounds on the season. The outstanding Sophomore led his team to an NCAA tournament game. All season long, he showcased why he is one of the best college guards in the country.

What Separates Him?

Brown is a dynamic guard in transition and in the pick-and-roll game.

This former D3 star can get into the teeth of the defence and create his own shot with floaters and pull-ups or kick out to find open shooters on the perimeter as well. He can also create easy dump downs for bigs as well. Good decision-making is the name of his game. A lot of the time, being a great guard comes down to making good reads, and he makes a lot of GREAT ones.

A couple of his go-to moves are the left-to-right crossover and the step back going left for pull-up midrange jump shots and threes.

Three skills that stood out the most to me!

Number 1 :

Brown is a star for being a fantastic hit-ahead passer. As an evaluator of great players, the one skill I see a lot of guards lack is their ability to give the ball up early and on target. Brown has no problem with this. Giving the ball up early allows your teammate to get in the game and show you trust them to make a play.

Number 2 :

His speed allows him to draw a ton of fouls and create free throws and bonus situations for his team. Brown shot an average of 78.7% from the free-throw line. He shot 174 free throws on the season.

Number 3 :

The way a guard controls the tempo of a game can determine wins and losses for a team. Bj Brown is like a masterful DJ on the turntables. A master DJ can set the rhythm and flow of an arena to get the crowd involved and create an amazing atmosphere. Brown can do the same as well, slow the pace or pick it up depending on the requirements of the team and the game.

Some small weaknesses are his ability to shoot off the catch and a couple of non-crisp passes leading to turnovers.

Another thing Brown has in his game is he is a good on-ball defender rearly gets beat off the dribble or blown by for easy points. Always manages to keep the ball in front and gets deflections.

You can’t miss Brown has showcased his game and is now on his way to play Division 2 basketball at West Alabama U. Congrats to this great guard. It shows that great players play at all levels, and only time, exposure, and resources can tell who is the best. That is why highlighting players and being a new type of resource is key.
